About Toneless Pinyin (Keyboard-Friendly Pinyin)

Toneless Pinyin — sometimes called "numberless pinyin", "keyboard pinyin", or just "pinyin without tone marks" — is the form of Chinese romanization that most learners type on everyday keyboards, phones, and chat apps. Instead of typing nǐhǎo, you simply type nihao. This translator is built specifically for that input style and is different from our standard Pinyin translator, which expects tone marks (ā, é, ǐ, ò, ǜ) or numbered tones.

Because a single syllable like ma can map to several Chinese characters (妈 mā, 麻 má, 马 mǎ, 驹 mà, 吗 ma), this page presents the most common Chinese character candidates for each toneless syllable along with their English meanings. This is useful when:

  • You're reading Pinyin from a source that omits tone marks (URLs, SMS, subtitles, usernames).
