Initials that learners mix up
  • zh, ch, sh are retroflex and not the same as z, c, s.
  • j, q, x are palatal and often get confused with zh, ch, sh.
  • r is its own sound, not an English r.
Finals worth double-checking
  • iu is a contracted spelling of iou.
  • ui is a contracted spelling of uei.
  • un is a contracted spelling of uen.
  • ang, eng, ing, ong need a clear nasal ending.
