Tips for Chinese Numbers & Dates
- 两 (liǎng) vs 二 (èr): Use 两 before measure words (两百 = 200) and 二 for digits and math.
- 一 (yī) tone changes: 一 changes tone depending on what follows — yī before 4th tone becomes yí, before others becomes yì.
- Phone numbers: 一 is often pronounced "yāo" in phone numbers to avoid confusion with 七 (qī).
- Date format: Chinese dates go Year → Month → Day (大到小, big to small).
- Time format: 点 (diǎn) = o'clock, 半 (bàn) = half, 分 (fēn) = minutes, 刻 (kè) = quarter.
- Money: 块 (kuài) = yuan, 毛 (máo) = 0.1 yuan, 分 (fēn) = 0.01 yuan.
