About Chinese to English and Pinyin Translation
This Chinese translator converts 汉字 (Hanzi) — Chinese characters — into three aligned lines: the original Chinese characters, their Pinyin romanization with tone marks, and their English meanings. Unlike grammar-rearranging translation engines, every character keeps its original position so you can study how each part of the sentence maps to its sound and meaning.
Simplified vs. Traditional Chinese
Switch between Simplified Chinese (简体) — used in mainland China and Singapore — and Traditional Chinese (繁體) — used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau — using the Translation Options panel above. The translator handles both with the same dictionary depth, and the Pinyin output is identical regardless of script choice.
How the Three-Line Output Helps
Most online translators give you a single fluent English sentence with no way to see how each Chinese character contributes. Our word-by-word display lets you:
- Match each Chinese character to its Pinyin pronunciation
- See multiple possible English meanings when a character has more than one
- Learn sentence structure in its original Chinese order
- Look up unfamiliar characters by reading the Pinyin and English directly below
When This Tool Works Best
This translator is built for learning, study, and accurate reference. It excels at:
- Reading a Chinese newspaper, menu, or book passage word-by-word
- Looking up Chinese names or proper nouns and seeing their Pinyin
- Preparing translation homework or vocabulary study sheets
- Understanding the structure behind a longer Chinese sentence
For natural-sounding fluent English translation of long documents, a grammar-rearranging tool like Google Translate may produce smoother prose. But when accuracy and visibility matter more than fluency — when you need to see what each character actually means — this word-by-word translator is the right tool.
Tip: If you have Pinyin text rather than Chinese characters, use the Pinyin Translator. For English-to-Chinese, use the English Translator.
