把它们想成三种维度：in 是在一个有内部空间的范围里（in China, in the kitchen, in my pocket）；on 是接触到一个表面（on the table, on the wall, on the third floor）；at 是把地点看成地图上的一个点（at the bus stop, at the door, at home）。同一个地方换个角度就换介词——in the school 是人在校舍里，at school 是在上学。
