Mandarin tone sandhi checker

Paste Chinese text or tone-marked pinyin. The dictionary reading and the connected-speech reading appear in aligned lines, with every changed syllable marked and the rule named. Nothing is saved or put in the URL.

Check a phrase

For pinyin, separate syllables with spaces and include tone marks or numbers. Punctuation starts a new phrase. Bare pinyin has no tones to apply a rule to, so this tool will not guess them.

What the checker changes

A citation reading is the pinyin a dictionary prints. Connected speech can change the tone you actually say: the first of two third tones rises; 不 changes before a fourth tone; and 一 changes according to the tone after it. The checker changes only those three mechanical cases.

It does not infer syntax. That matters when three or more third tones touch: different grammatical groupings can produce different readings. Rather than make a plausible-looking guess, the result shows both groupings and leaves the choice unresolved. Half-third-tone pitch is also not rewritten as a new pinyin tone because it is a phonetic realization, not a change of tone category.

Questions people ask

Why does written pinyin not show tone sandhi?

Pinyin normally records the citation tone — the word's dictionary form. Connected speech can change what is said without changing how the word is written.

What happens with three third tones in a row?

The result depends on how the words group grammatically. This checker labels the run ambiguous and displays both groupings; it never quietly selects one.

Is my text stored?

No. The POST is processed for this response and is not saved, and the text is never copied into the URL.

How does the audio work?

Nothing is synthesized when the page loads. Pressing Play sends that connected reading to /api/audio/word. Longer readings keep their written analysis but get no button, matching the endpoint's 100-character cost guard.
