My Words Quest

Pick 8–12 words you saved, then clear Meaning, Memory Match and Typing.

Choose 8 to 12 of the words you saved to your review deck and play exactly those: pick their meanings, pair them face down in Memory Match, then type their pinyin from memory. Your list never leaves this browser.

Each set is 8 or more easy everyday words from the site's illustrated flashcard decks, one picture per theme, so the Picture round comes with it. Meanings come from this site's dictionary; definitions adapted from CC-CEDICT are marked †.

How My Words Quest Works

Saving a word is the easy half. This quest asks for the same words four different ways, a few minutes apart, so the ones you only half knew show up while you can still fix them. Every stage uses only the words you chose: the wrong answers on the buttons are your other words, never strangers. When meanings overlap too much for fair choices, recall the meaning and reveal it without scoring; every selected word stays in the quest.

  1. Picture (bonus). See one of the site's pictures and pick which of your words it shows. Offered when at least 3 of your words have one of the site's 694 pictures.
  2. Meaning. Pick what each of your words means — or, from Advanced, which word a meaning belongs to.
  3. Memory Match. Turn the cards two at a time and pair every word with its meaning.
  4. Typing. Type the pinyin of each word from memory.

A missed choice comes back once later in its stage. Typing offers another try and an answer reveal; Memory Match keeps unmatched pairs on the board. Mistakes do not take points away. Answer first time, several in a row, and a combo builds to x@MyWordsQuest.MaxCombo. Clear a stage with 70% or more of its scored questions right first time and its chest opens for 500 bonus points, multiplied by your level. In Memory Match, earn the chest within 1.75 turns per pair. Unscored recall earns no points.

Four Levels, Beginner to Expert

You chose the words, so a level here is not harder vocabulary: it is how much help you get with your own. Each level takes one support away, and harder levels multiply the score this device keeps for you. Choose the level before starting; it stays the same throughout that quest.

LevelWhat changesScore
Beginner Pinyin shown, Memory Match shows the board for four seconds first, and typing takes the pinyin without tones. ×1
Intermediate Pinyin hidden (show it at half points), a shorter look at the board, and typing still without tones. ×2
Advanced Meaning reversed: read the meaning and pick the word. Typing needs the tones, as marks or numbers. ×3
Expert No pinyin until you answer, no look at the board, typing with tones and no hints. ×4

Your Words, Your Browser

The words come from your review deck, which fills up as you press the green + button on the HSK word lists, the flashcard decks, the graded readers, articles, travel phrases and your own translations. Each saved card carries the pinyin and meaning the site showed you, which come from this site's own dictionary, or from CC-CEDICT where ours has no entry (marked †).

The deck and the words you choose here stay in this browser — there is no account and nothing to sync. The only request a word makes is when you press its speaker button to hear it. When you finish, the summary lists the words you missed and sends you back to your review deck, where spaced repetition takes over. For a quest over the site's own themed words, try Chinese Quest.

Questions people ask

How do I choose my words?

Save words with the green + button anywhere on the site — the HSK lists, flashcards, articles, stories, travel phrases or your own translations. They land in your review deck. On this page tick 8 to 12 of them, or let the page pick the ones due for review, your newest, or the words you saved from one page. No deck yet? Save one of the starter sets below with one press.

What are the stages?

Meaning asks what each of your words means, Memory Match turns the words and their meanings face down and asks you to pair them, and Typing asks for each word's pinyin from memory. When at least 3 of your words have one of the site's pictures, a Picture round comes first: see the picture and pick which of your words it shows. Clear Typing and the quest is done.

What happens if I get one wrong?

You see the right answer at once, the word comes back later in the same stage, and nothing you have already earned is taken away. There are no lives to lose. The end screen lists every word you missed, with its reading, meaning and a link to look it up, and one button back to your review deck.

What do the levels change?

Beginner: Pinyin shown, Memory Match shows the board for four seconds first, and typing takes the pinyin without tones. Intermediate: Pinyin hidden (show it at half points), a shorter look at the board, and typing still without tones. Advanced: Meaning reversed: read the meaning and pick the word. Typing needs the tones, as marks or numbers. Expert: No pinyin until you answer, no look at the board, typing with tones and no hints. Harder levels multiply your score, which is kept on this device only.

Where do the meanings and pinyin come from?

From your own saved cards: each one carries the reading and meaning the site showed when you saved it, which come from this site's own Chinese dictionary, or from CC-CEDICT where ours has no entry — those definitions are marked †. Every wrong answer is another word you chose, so nothing is made up.

Is my word list sent anywhere?

No. Your deck and the words you choose here stay in your browser. The only request a word can make is when you press a speaker button to hear it, exactly as on the review page. It is free, with no account and no sign-up.
