HSK Level Analyzer

The HSK Level Analyzer grades any Chinese passage against the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) vocabulary levels so you can tell, at a glance, whether a text matches a learner's level. Paste a sentence, a paragraph, or a whole reading passage and you'll get the percentage of words at each level, a color-coded view that highlights harder words, and a ready-made list of the words that go beyond HSK.

Because Chinese is written without spaces between words, the analyzer first segments the text — it walks through your input and, at each point, takes the longest run of characters that forms a real dictionary word. That same in-memory dictionary supplies the pinyin and English meaning shown for every word, so the breakdown is instant and works completely offline of any translation API.

The second question the page answers is the personal one: which words am I missing? Tell it how far you have got — HSK 1 (beginner) through HSK 6 (expert) — and it lists the words in your text that sit above your level, grouped by the level each one belongs to and ordered by how often it appears, so the words worth learning first are at the top. Every one carries its pinyin and meaning and a button that saves it to a free review deck, and the reading view rings the same words in the sentences you pasted.

Two things it deliberately will not do. It will not tell you to learn a word the dictionary has no entry for — names, rare characters and typos are reported separately, because 王小明 is not vocabulary and there is nothing to put on the back of that card. And it will not drop those words from the percentage either: they are counted against your coverage, because leaving them out is how a "you know 96% of this" figure gets inflated, and the inflated version is the one that looks right.

What is the HSK Level Analyzer?

A free tool that reads Chinese text you paste in and reports how its vocabulary spreads across HSK levels 1–6. It splits the text into words, classifies each by HSK level, lists the words beyond HSK, and shows a color-coded reading view with pinyin and meanings. Nothing is stored.

How does it find where each word starts and ends?

Chinese has no spaces between words, so the analyzer uses greedy longest-match segmentation against an in-memory Chinese dictionary: at each position it takes the longest sequence of characters that forms a known word. The same dictionary provides the pinyin and meanings.

How do I find out which words in a Chinese text I do not know yet?

What share of a Chinese text do I need to know in order to read it?

Around 98% of the words is the figure commonly cited for comfortable reading with nothing to look words up in; at roughly 95% a text is readable with a dictionary beside you, and below about 90% it is study material rather than reading practice. The analyzer reports which of those bands your chosen level puts you in for the text you pasted. The bands are this site's own, and words the dictionary cannot identify are counted against your coverage rather than quietly dropped.
