Quick answer: A 田字格 (tián zì gé, “field-character grid”) is the
cross-lined square Chinese students use to learn handwriting — the dashed lines mark the four quadrants so each
stroke lands in the right spot. This free generator turns any characters you type into a printable 田字格 (or
米字格) worksheet with a model character, faded tracing cells, and blank cells for practice.
How to make a Chinese practice sheet
- Type or paste the characters you want to practice in the box above.
- Pick the grid style (田字格 or 米字格), cell size, columns, and rows per character.
- Optionally add a four-line pinyin strip or switch to a gray, ink-saving grid.
- Click Print / Save as PDF — the navigation, controls, and ads are removed automatically.
田字格 vs 米字格
Both are square guides. The 田字格 has one vertical and one horizontal center line (four quadrants, like 田 “field”). The 米字格 adds two diagonals (eight sections, like 米 “rice”), giving beginners extra reference points for stroke angle and proportion. Start with 田字格; switch to 米字格 for tricky, balanced characters.
