How the HSK levels fit together

The HSK (汉语水平考试, Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì) is the standard Chinese proficiency exam. Each level assumes all the vocabulary of the levels below it: HSK 1 starts with 150 words, and by HSK 6 you know about 5,000. Levels 1–2 show pinyin on the exam paper and have no writing section; from HSK 3 the pinyin support disappears and writing begins.
