The Chinese symbol for luck and blessing — 福 (fú)
福 (fú) is good fortune in the sense of blessing — fortune conferred rather than fortune gambled. It is the character pasted upside down on doors at Chinese New Year, and the upside-down part is a pun, not a decorating choice.

What 福 means
Where the character comes from
福 is 礻, the altar or spirit radical, beside 畐, a vessel full to the brim. An offering made at an altar for abundance. The same 畐 appears in 富 (rich), which is why the two characters look so alike.
How it is actually used
幸福 is happiness in the sense of a good life, 祝福 is to bless or wish someone well, 福气 is good fortune as a quality someone has, and 享福 is to enjoy an easy life. 福禄寿 — fortune, prosperity and longevity — is the traditional trio.
What 福 does not mean
It does not mean luck in the chance sense. Winning a bet is 运气 or 好运. 福 is closer to 'blessedness': something you have been granted, often over a lifetime.
Claims you will meet elsewhere
"福 means luck, so it belongs on a lucky charm."
运 and 运气 are chance-luck. 福 is a blessing — the difference between 'I got lucky' and 'I have been fortunate'.
"Hang 福 upside down for luck."
True, and the reason is a pun: 福倒了 (fú dào le, 'fú is upside down') sounds exactly like 福到了 ('fortune has arrived'). It is a doorway custom for the New Year. Upside down on skin, or on a wall in July, just reads as upside down.
"福 and 富 are variants of the same character."
They share the 畐 phonetic and nothing else. 福 is blessing; 富 is wealth.

福 is the same in simplified and traditional Chinese, thirteen strokes. It is the character most often rendered in 篆书 seal script — the round, dense 福 you see on paper-cuts and red diamonds is usually a stylised seal form rather than the printed shape.

Other ways to say luck and blessing
福 is one answer, not the answer. Which of these is right depends on what you mean by "luck and blessing" — and that is usually the question worth settling before anything is written down permanently.
Fortune as chance. 好运 is good luck and 运气 is the luck you happen to have on a given day.
Auspicious. 吉祥 is the word on New Year decorations and 吉利 means lucky in the sense of a good omen.
Longevity — the third of the traditional trio 福禄寿, and the one carved on gifts meant to last.
