Printable HSK Flashcards

1. Choose the words. Tick the HSK levels you want. The words come from the official HSK lists in list order — the same lists behind the HSK hubs and the online flashcards — so you can work through a level batch by batch instead of printing 2,500 cards at once.
2. Choose the layout. 9 cards a page is the standard size; 4 is large enough to read across a room and 16 fits a pocket deck. Pick simplified or traditional, and decide what the back carries.
3. Print on both sides. Press Print / Save as PDF, then turn on your printer's two-sided setting and flip on the long edge. The back sheets are already mirrored, so each meaning lands behind its own character.
4. Cut them out. Cut along the dashed guides. The cards tile edge to edge, so a single cut separates two cards and a paper trimmer clears a full sheet in about a minute.

Paper flashcards beat an app at one thing in particular — you can sort them. The Leitner method uses that: line up three to five boxes (envelopes, or elastic bands round each pile). Every new card starts in box 1. Get a card right and it moves one box up; get it wrong and it goes straight back to box 1, however far it had climbed.

Then review by box, not by deck: box 1 every day, box 2 every other day, box 3 twice a week, box 4 weekly. The words you keep forgetting come round constantly and the ones you know stop wasting your time — which is the whole of spaced repetition, done with your hands.

Two habits worth keeping: say the word aloud with its tone before you turn the card over, and test both directions — hanzi to meaning is recognition, meaning to hanzi is recall, and only the second one gets you writing and speaking. If you would rather have the algorithm keep score for you, the review queue does the same thing device-locally, and the online flashcards carry audio for every word.

Are these printable HSK flashcards really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no email address to hand over and no cap on how many sets you print. The whole site is free and ad-supported.

How do I get a PDF file rather than a printout?

Press Print / Save as PDF and choose Save as PDF as the destination in the print dialog — every browser offers it. The file you get is a real PDF with selectable text, because the Chinese is typeset by your browser with your own system font rather than flattened into an image.

Why are the backs of the cards printed in reverse order?

Because paper flips. Turn a sheet over on its long edge and the columns mirror, so the back of the top-left card ends up top-right. The back sheets are pre-mirrored to cancel that out, which is what puts each meaning behind its own character. If your printer already reverses the page for you, untick Mirror backs for double-sided printing.

Can I print traditional characters instead of simplified?

Yes — switch the script option to 繁體 and every card is rebuilt with the traditional form of the same HSK word, keeping its pinyin and meaning. The Simplified ↔ Traditional converter handles the same job for your own text.

What paper size do the cards fit?

Both A4 and US Letter. The card sizes are fixed in millimetres and chosen to fit inside the smaller of the two in each direction, so a deck printed on A4 and a deck printed on Letter stack together.

How many words are in each HSK level?

HSK 1 has 150 words, HSK 2 adds 151, HSK 3 adds 300, HSK 4 adds 600, HSK 5 adds 1,300 and HSK 6 adds 2,500 — 5,001 in all. This tool prints them in official list order, up to 200 cards at a time, and the Next batch button picks up where the last sheet stopped.
