Built-in spaced repetition
As waves escalate to higher HSK levels, earlier words keep falling too. Meeting the same word again across waves — spaced out over the game — is exactly how long-term vocabulary memory forms.

- Warm up on HSK 1 — find your rhythm with familiar words before jumping to higher levels.
- Beginners: pick Relaxed speed — words fall more slowly so you can read the pinyin and think. Once you're confident, faster speeds are harder but score more.
- Say each word aloud — reading the pinyin as you answer ties the character, sound and meaning together.
- Chase the combo multiplier — consecutive correct answers multiply your score, and chasing combos is efficient review.
- Crank up the speed for the leaderboard — Fast and Insane fall quicker but multiply every point (×1.5 and ×2), so top scores come from bold play.
- Hide the pinyin when ready — recognizing bare hanzi is the real reading skill; toggle pinyin off to train it.

Catch It Before It Lands: Two Words and a Real Run
A word drops into the sky with its pinyin underneath, say 猫 (māo), and four English meanings wait below it: Tea, Cat, Book and Water. Tap Cat before the tile reaches the ground. A right answer is worth 10 points plus up to 5 more for speed, so the sooner you tap, the more it scores.
When you are ready, switch the Pinyin toggle off and the next word falls as a bare character: 狗 (gǒu). Apple, Cat, Dog or Book? It is Dog. Yes, it is raining cats and dogs.

How do you play Word Rain?
A Chinese word falls from the top of the screen with its pinyin underneath. Tap the correct English meaning among four options before the word hits the ground. A wrong answer or a missed word costs one of your three lives. Each wave has 10 words, and every wave falls faster. You can also choose a starting speed — Relaxed, Normal, Fast or Insane — and faster speeds multiply your score (up to double on Insane), so bolder play earns higher leaderboard scores.
Does a timed game actually help you learn Chinese words?

What vocabulary does Word Rain cover?
The word bank is shared with this site's HSK flashcards and covers HSK levels 1-6, from beginner words like 我 and 你 up to advanced vocabulary. You can start at any HSK level, and as waves progress the game automatically mixes in words from the next level.
Can I hide the pinyin?
Yes. Beginners can keep pinyin visible under each falling character, and more advanced learners can switch it off to practice recognizing hanzi alone. The setting is remembered between visits.
