The Chinese symbol for wisdom — 智 (zhì)

智 (zhì) is wisdom in the sense of intelligence and sound judgement — knowing how to act. In modern Chinese it has also become the character for 'smart' in the technological sense: 智能手机 is a smartphone and 人工智能 is artificial intelligence.

What means

Where the character comes from

智 is 知 (to know) written over 日 (sun, day). 知 itself is 矢 (an arrow) beside 口 (a mouth) — to say a thing as straight as an arrow flies.

How it is actually used

智慧 is wisdom, 智能 is intelligence in the machine sense, 理智 is rationality or level-headedness, 明智 is sensible, and 智商 is IQ.

What does not mean

It does not mean the serene wisdom of age or of contemplation. 慧 carries more of that, and 智慧 together is what you would actually write for the English word.

Claims you will meet elsewhere

"智 means wisdom."

智慧 means wisdom. On its own 智 now leans hard toward intelligence and smartness — the 智 in 智能电视 is a smart TV, not a wise one.

"智 is a timeless, contemplative character."

It is one of the five Confucian constants, so the classical weight is real. But its dominant modern use is technological, and any Chinese reader under forty meets it in that sense daily.

The character in different scripts

Simplified
简体
Traditional
繁體

智 is the same in simplified and traditional Chinese, twelve strokes. Its top-heavy structure — a wide 知 sitting on a narrow 日 — makes it a difficult character to balance by hand, and a good test of a calligrapher.

Both glyphs above are set in whatever Chinese font your device uses, which is a 楷书-derived regular script — the same shape a printer or a tattoo studio's "Chinese font" will produce. Brush styles (行书 running, 草书 cursive, 篆书 seal) look substantially different and are worth commissioning from a calligrapher rather than approximating from a font. Other ways to say wisdom

智 is one answer, not the answer. Which of these is right depends on what you mean by "wisdom" — and that is usually the question worth settling before anything is written down permanently.

huì · Intelligent

Insight and discernment — the more contemplative half of 智慧, and the character used in Buddhist contexts for wisdom.

zhìhuì · Wisdom (knowledge - intelligence)

Wisdom — the word itself, and the unambiguous choice.

· Realize (aware of - comprehend)

To realise, to wake up to something. 领悟 is grasping a truth; this is wisdom as a moment rather than a quality.
