How to Use This Generator
  1. Pick a word source: an HSK level and word count, or paste this week's dictation list.
  2. Choose the mode: Listening dictation (rows show only numbered boxes — you read each word aloud twice) or Pinyin → hanzi (rows show the pinyin, students write the characters).
  3. Print one sheet per student, and keep the answer-key page — in listening mode it is your reading script, in order.
  4. Each word gets one box per character, so students also learn to expect the right word length.
Frequently Asked Questions

What is 听写 (tīngxiě) dictation?

听写 — literally 'listen-write' — is the standard Chinese school exercise where the teacher reads words aloud and students write the characters from memory. It trains listening, character recall and stroke accuracy at once, and this generator prints the classic numbered-boxes sheet for it from any word list.

What is the pinyin → hanzi mode for?

Instead of reading aloud, the sheet prints each word's pinyin next to the empty boxes and students write the matching characters — perfect for homework and self-study, where nobody is there to dictate. It isolates exactly the skill HSK 3+ exams test: producing characters from sound.

Why does each word get a specific number of boxes?

One box per character, so 电脑 gets two boxes and 图书馆 three. The box count is a gentle hint that trains students to hear syllable count, and the square boxes encourage properly proportioned characters, like 田字格 practice grids.

Where is the list of words I should read aloud?

Tick 'Answer key' — the key page lists every word in sheet order with pinyin and meaning. In listening mode, that page is your dictation script; afterwards it doubles as the marking key.
