About this deck

Practise 26 words with a matching picture on every card. Say the word before you look at the answer, then pair it in your head with another card: which pot does this action need, which seasoning goes in? The actions are the words you will meet again in dish names, so when 炒, 炸, 煎, 煮, 蒸 or 烤 comes round, think of a dish that contains it. Use New shuffle for a second round, save the words you hesitate on for Review, then read the dish list linked below and spot the cooking methods inside the names.

This 26-card selection is the kitchen itself: six pots and tools, six appliances and fixtures, four seasonings and ten cooking actions. Look-alikes are drawn apart on purpose: 锅 is a lidded steel pot with no fire, 煮 an open blue pot boiling over a flame, and 炖 a red casserole on a low flame beside a clock; 炒锅 is the wok at rest, 炒 the wok in use with food in the air, 炸 a pot of bubbling oil with golden pieces in a basket, and 煎 a flat pan with two fried dumplings. 勺 shows the ladle sense and 切 the qiē reading, both from the site dictionary's own entries; 炖 keeps the dictionary's note, cooked slowly. The site dictionary glosses 炒, 炸 and 煎 all as fry, so deep-fry and pan-fry are ThePureLanguage's own glosses for this deck, with the dictionary's readings. Knives, bowls, plates, chopsticks and spoons are in Restaurant & Menu Words, the kitchen itself in Home, sugar in Drinks, ingredients in Fruit & Vegetables and dishes in Food.

Think you know them? The Chinese Picture Quiz says a word and shows it in characters, and you tap its picture — these cards mixed with every other picture deck.
