What is on the paper

Section Questions Marks
听力 Listening 40 100
阅读 Reading 30 100
书写 Writing 10 100
Total 80 300
  • 90 minutes for the whole paper. One clock, not one per section — the real exam times each section separately, and this does not pretend to.
  • Pass mark 180 / 300, the same as the real paper. Each section is worth 100.
  • Listening questions have a play button. Press it as often as you like — that is more generous than the real exam, which plays each item twice at HSK 3.
  • You can skip and come back. Nothing is submitted or stored, and there is no sign-up.

    Where these questions come from

Every question is built from material published elsewhere on this site: the official HSK 3 word list, the hand-written example sentences on the dictionary pages, and the graded readers — whose comprehension questions are reused exactly as they were written. Word boundaries in the gap-fill and word-order questions come from the same segmenter the translators use, so a question can never disagree with the dictionary about where a word starts.

That also means the paper is different every time: there is far more material at this level than one sitting can use, so retaking it is a new exam rather than a second look at the same one.

    Questions people ask

Is this the real HSK 3 exam?

No — it is a practice paper with the real paper's shape: the same sections, the same number of questions in each, the same 90-minute working time and the same 180 / 300 pass mark. The questions are generated from HSK 3 material, not taken from a past paper.

Why is there only one clock?

The real exam times each section separately and plays the listening once or twice at a fixed pace. This gives you the whole 90 minutes to use as you like and lets you replay any listening question. It is a study tool, and being stricter than that would make it worse at teaching.

Why is there no HSK 5 or HSK 6 paper?

Honesty about the material. A paper needs a large stock of example sentences, and this site currently holds hundreds at HSK 1–4 but only about twenty each at HSK 5 and 6 — so those papers would recycle the same handful of sentences several times in one sitting. They will appear when the sentences behind them do. In the meantime the HSK 5 and HSK 6 word lists carry their own vocabulary tests.
