HSK 3 grammar is the classic intermediate wall: 把, 被 and verb complements. Master these eight and the reading section opens up.
- 把 sentences — 请把门关上。 Qǐng bǎ mén guānshang. — Please close the door.
- 被 passive — 蛋糕被他吃了。 The cake was eaten by him.
- Result complements 完/好/到/见 — 作业做完了。 The homework is finished.
- Directional complements 上来/下去/出来 — 他跑出来了。 He ran out.
- 得 degree complement — 她说得很快。 Tā shuō de hěn kuài. — She speaks fast.
- 越来越 — more and more — 天气越来越热。 The weather is getting hotter and hotter.
- 一边…一边 — doing two things at once — 他一边吃饭一边看电视。 He eats while watching TV.

HSK 3 study plan
Plan on about six months from HSK 2. The big changes: 300 new words, a writing section, and no pinyin on the exam paper.
Months 1–2 — First 150 words
- Learn words 1–150 (5 new words/day) with HSK 3 flashcards.
- Start 把/被 and result complements from the grammar list above.
- The exam has no pinyin — read each new word's characters aloud before flipping the card.
Months 3–4 — Second 150 & writing
- Finish words 151–300, mixing shuffled review of months 1–2.

HSK 3 — frequently asked questions
How many words do you need to know for HSK 3?
HSK 3 assumes 600 words in total: 300 from HSK 1–2 plus the 300 new words on this page. They expand into work, school, travel and daily-life topics, and the exam expects you to read them without pinyin.
What is the HSK 3 exam format and pass score?
HSK 3 has three sections: Listening (40 questions), Reading (30 questions) and — new at this level — Writing (10 questions), about 85–90 minutes in total. Each section is worth 100 points for a 300-point maximum, and you pass with 180 points (60%).
Does HSK 3 show pinyin like HSK 1 and 2?
No — HSK 3 is the first level printed without pinyin support. That is why character recognition matters more from here on: every reading and writing question is characters-only.
What is in the HSK 3 writing section?
Two tasks: rearranging given words into a correct sentence (5 questions), and writing the missing character in a sentence from its pinyin (5 questions). Regular handwriting practice with 田字格 grid sheets covers everything the exam asks.
How long does it take to prepare for HSK 3?
From HSK 2, most learners need about five to six months at 30–45 minutes per day — roughly 150–300 total hours of Chinese study from zero. The three-phase plan above paces the 300 new words at five a day with writing practice from month three.
