Chinese Handwriting vs Fonts: Why 你 Looks Different

You copy 你 carefully from your textbook, show it to a Chinese friend, and they say it looks… odd. Not wrong. Just strange. The reason is not your pen control — it is that you have been copying a typeface, not handwriting.

Almost every Chinese character you have read on a screen or in a book is set in 宋体 (Sòngtǐ), a typeface developed for woodblock and metal printing. Its flat horizontals and neat triangular stroke-ends exist because they carve and cast well, not because anyone writes that way. Handwriting follows the movement of a brush or pen: strokes enter, change weight, and exit with a flick.

The short version: read in 宋体/黑体, but learn to write from 楷体 (Kǎitǐ) — the font modelled on handwriting, and the one Chinese primary-school textbooks use for exactly this reason.

The Four Fonts You Will Meet

If the four samples above look identical, your device does not have those Chinese fonts installed and is substituting one for all of them — common on Linux and some Android builds. Ten Characters Where It Actually Shows

What changes: The 尔 part: print stacks a flat horizontal with two symmetrical dots; by hand the top is a soft ㇀ and the 小 below is written with a clear hook and two quick flicks.

Why it matters: It is the first character most learners write, and copying the printed serif shape is what makes handwriting look stiff and machine-like.

What changes: Print gives a squared-off top-left corner with a straight vertical; handwriting opens it into a dot plus a curved stroke that never fully closes the corner.

Why it matters: 门 is also a radical (in 问, 间, 闻), so a stiff printed 门 spreads the same awkwardness across dozens of characters.

What changes: The crossing strokes meet at sharp right angles in print. Written by hand the long horizontal sweeps through with a rising tail and the two diagonals cross more loosely.

Why it matters: As a radical it appears in 好, 她, 妈, 姐 — very high frequency, so the printed version is worth un-learning early.

Same Character, Different Country: Regional Glyph Standards

Some of the differences above are not print-versus-handwriting at all — they are genuine disagreements between national standards. Mainland China (新字形), Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan each publish their own official glyph shapes, and Unicode treats them as the same character. Which shape you see depends entirely on which font your device picked.

  • (, bone) — the small box at the top faces left in the mainland standard, right in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
  • (lìng, order) — mainland print typically uses 龴 below the roof; the handwritten and Taiwan forms use a dot over a horizontal. The same split affects 领, 冷 and 零.
  • (shuō, to speak) — the top of the right-hand side is 丷 in mainland fonts and 八 in traditional ones.
  • (zhí, straight) — the interior horizontal count and the way the bottom stroke connects differ between standards.

What To Actually Do About It

  1. Switch your study materials to 楷体. Most e-readers, Anki and Pleco let you set the Chinese font. Reading vocabulary in Kaiti while you learn to write costs nothing and fixes the input.
  2. Learn stroke order, not shapes. A character copied stroke-correctly will look right even in your own messy hand; one traced from a printed outline will not. Watch any character being written on our Stroke Order Animator.

  4. Do not "fix" a regional variant. If your textbook and your phone disagree about 骨 or 令, neither is a typo. Pick the standard for the region you are learning for and stay consistent.
  5. Ignore 行书 and 草书 for now. Running and cursive scripts are a separate skill built on top of 楷书. Get regular script solid first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because the font you are reading is 宋体 (Songti), a typeface designed for woodblock and metal printing, not a model for the pen. Printed 你 gives the 尔 component flat horizontals and symmetrical dots; handwritten 你 follows brush movement, so the top is a soft rising stroke and the lower 小 has a real hook and two quick flicks. Neither is wrong — they are the print and handwriting styles of the same character.

楷体 (Kaiti). It is modelled directly on 楷书 regular script — the standard handwriting style — so entry strokes, exit strokes and weight changes are all visible. Chinese primary-school textbooks use it for exactly this reason. Learn to read in 宋体 and 黑体, but learn to write from 楷体.

宋体 (Songti) is the serif print face: flat horizontals with triangular ends, used in books and dictionaries. 黑体 (Heiti) is the sans-serif: even stroke weight, used on screens and signage. 楷体 (Kaiti) imitates brush handwriting and is the one used to teach writing. 仿宋 (Fangsong) sits between Song and Kai and appears in official documents.

Because 骨 is one of the characters where the mainland and Taiwan/Hong Kong glyph standards genuinely differ — the small box at the top faces left in the mainland standard and right in the others. Unicode treats them as the same character, so which shape you see depends on which regional font your device chose. 直, 令 and the top of 说 differ the same way.

It is legible, so it is not an error — but it reads as obviously non-native, in the same way block capitals do in English. More practically, copying printed shapes tends to hide stroke order, and stroke order is what makes characters come out balanced at speed and what handwriting-recognition input relies on.
