Tips for Learning Survival Phrases
Learn phrases, not words
Memorize 多少钱 (duōshao qián) as one chunk meaning "how much?" rather than three separate words. Whole phrases come out faster under pressure — exactly when you need them.
Say it out loud with the audio
After the audio plays, repeat the phrase aloud, copying the tones. Your mouth needs the practice as much as your ears — silent studying won't help you at a market stall.
Master the "rescue phrases" first
我听不懂 (I don't understand), 请再说一遍 (say it again) and 慢一点 (slower) keep a conversation alive when you're lost. They buy you time and goodwill in any situation.
Tones matter, but don't freeze
Context usually rescues imperfect tones in a short, common phrase — a confident 谢谢 with shaky tones beats silence. Practice tones with the Tone Trainer as you go.
