Tips for Learning Chinese Dish Names
Learn the building blocks
A few characters unlock dozens of dishes: 炒 (chǎo, stir-fry), 面 (miàn, noodles), 饭 (fàn, rice), 汤 (tāng, soup), 肉 (ròu, meat), 鸡 (jī, chicken). Spot these and you can guess what a dish is.
Listen, then say it out loud
After the audio plays, repeat the dish name aloud, copying the tones. Ordering food is the perfect low-stakes way to practise speaking Chinese on a trip.
Cooking words describe the flavour
红烧 (red-braised), 糖醋 (sweet-and-sour) and 鱼香 (fish-fragrant) tell you how a dish tastes before you order. Learn the methods and the menu makes sense.
Start with what you already know
Dumplings, fried rice and Kung Pao chicken are familiar names that lower the difficulty. Anchor new dishes to ones you recognise, then branch out by region.
